DESCRIPTION:Todor Bodganov: Building the Next Generation of Learning Environments with In-House Technology Labs\nThe establishment of in-house technology laboratories within higher education institutions is a key factor in modernizing the learning process and preparing a new generation of specialists equipped to meet the real-world challenges of contemporary practice. These centers—encompassing 3D printing\, digital modeling\, simulation technologies\, and other innovative tools—enable the integration of practical\, experimental\, and problem-based learning from the early stages of student training. \nAt the Medical University of Sofia\, the 3D Laboratory has become a successful example of in-house infrastructure that combines research potential with the aim of improving the quality of medical education. DESCRIPTION:Gabriella Mincione: The Quality of the Educational Relationship\, Il Piccolo Ascolto\nIl Piccolo Ascolto is a web platform (Ida Verna\, SIAE\, 2021\, 2026) designed for use by teachers and students\, aimed at providing teachers with information on the quality of the “educational relationship” determined by teaching and learning processes. Specifically\, the teacher administers a course satisfaction questionnaire to students\, focused on several critical areas of teaching quality (Van Dijk et al.\, 2020)\, while simultaneously completing a similar self-assessment questionnaire. Upon completion of both questionnaires\, the Il Piccolo Ascolto platform provides the teacher (in real-time) with aggregate information on the distance (gap) between the students’ opinions and those of the teacher\, highlighting areas of teaching quality where a discrepancy of opinions\, a “relational gap” (Verna I.\, 2020)\, emerges. The aim is to trigger a process of reflection-on-action in the teacher\, guided by the “relational gap” and supported by a further reflective stage represented by an in-depth questionnaire on the critical issues identified. In particular\, the platform provides an additional moment of reflection-on-action which\, starting from the “relational gap\,” investigates potential problems from which the gap originates through a further questionnaire focused only on those areas where criticalities emerged. The goal is to facilitate and support the teacher in the process of improving teaching quality by listening to the needs that emerge within a specific teaching-learning context and doing so in itinere (ongoing) with respect to the development of educational processes. Although Student Evaluation of Teaching is widely used\, international literature often highlights a low correlation between teachers’ self-assessment and student judgment (Matthews\, 2025). Studies such as those by Wisniewski et al. (2021) confirm that teachers have “privileged access” to their own thoughts but not always to the behavioral signals they send\, leading to considerable divergences with students. Furthermore\, literature recognizes the existence of a widespread “perception problem” (Wisniewski et al.\, 2021) and a systematic lack of alignment between self-assessment and student judgment (Daumiller et al.\, 2022); in this sense\, Il Piccolo Ascolto can represent a contribution to overcoming this limitation. Students work in international and interdisciplinary teams throughout the programme:  \n\nDesigning\, building and testing a 3D structural model on a shaking table\nPerforming numerical simulations and comparing predictions with experimental seismic responses\nApplying iterative design refinement based on experimental feedback\n\nSpecial emphasis is placed on systems thinking and critical analysis\, supported by interactive demonstrations\, live laboratory experiments\, and poster presentations. \nCompetences you will develope\n\nStructural dynamics and earthquake engineering: degrees of freedom\, stiffness\, damping\, equation of motion\, natural frequencies\, modal shapes\nSeismic design principles and modern structural protection strategies (ductile design\, energy dissipation devices\, adaptive systems — TLD\, TMD — and base isolation)\nExperiential and hands-on learning: physical models\, laboratory experiments and shaking-table tests\nSystems thinking and societal awareness: seismic performance in the wider built environment\nInternational and intercultural collaboration: knowledge exchange and professional networking across INGENIUM institutions\nCritical thinking: evaluating design choices\, interpreting experimental results and comparing engineering strategies\nTransversal skills: communication\, dissemination\, and collaborative teamwork\n\nLearning Outcomes\nAfter successful completion of the BIP\, students will be able to: \n\nLO1. Explain the fundamental principles of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering\, including degrees of freedom\, stiffness\, damping\, natural frequencies\, modal shapes\, and seismic response spectra\nLO2. Design\, build and test a 3D structural model on a shaking table\, interpreting experimental results and comparing simulated with real seismic responses\nLO3. Apply numerical simulation tools (LinPRO\, Python\, Matlab) to model structural behaviour under seismic loading and iteratively refine designs based on experimental feedback\nLO4. Evaluate modern seismic protection strategies (ductile design\, energy dissipation devices\, TLD\, TMD\, base isolation) and apply critical thinking when comparing engineering design choices across seismic contexts\nLO5. Collaborate effectively in international\, intercultural teams\, sharing local seismic engineering perspectives and developing professional networks across INGENIUM partner institutions\n\nBIP’s Programme\nVirtual component (online activities)\nPeriod: mid-October / mid-November \nSchedule / Contents:  \nVM 1 — Introduction to Structural Dynamics:  \n\nEssential theoretical foundations: degrees of freedom\, stiffness\, damping\, equation of motion for SDOF systems\, natural frequencies and modal shapes\nBehaviour of damped and undamped systems under forced vibration: harmonic loading\, resonance and amplitude ratios\nInteractive demonstrations using numerical and finite element software (LinPRO\, Python\, Matlab)\n\nVM 2 — Understanding Earthquakes: From Ground Motion to Structural Systems:  \n\nIntroduction to seismology: Earth’s structure\, seismic zones\, causes and types of earthquakes\, seismic waves and measurement scales\nKey engineering concepts: ground-motion parameters (PGA)\, response spectra\, structural systems\, soil dynamics and soil–structure interaction\nModern seismic protection strategies: ductile design\, energy dissipation devices\, adaptive systems (TLD\, TMD) and base isolation\n\nVM 3 — Feedback session and evaluation \nPhysical component (on-site at TUIASI) \nPeriod: November 2026 \nProgramme / Contents:  \n\nIntroduction to the shaking table: initial experiment and review of the first numerical assignment\nIntroduction to damping devices and project requirements briefing; team formation\nWorking sessions: teams design\, build and test a small 3D building model on a shaking table\nNumerical simulations: teams perform structural modelling and compare predictions with shaking-table test results\nGuided design refinement: iterative improvement of structural models and analyses based on experimental feedback\nFinal model testing: conclusive shaking-table test comparing simulated and experimental seismic responses\nConcise poster presentations by each team\nTeam evaluation session\n\nDuration: 5-day on-site module (09:00–17:30 daily) \nApplication requirements\nTo apply for this BIP you must: \n\nBe enrolled at one of the INGENIUM partner universities at the time of the programme.\nApply through your home (sending) institution.\nHave a sufficient level of English (typically B2 or equivalent).\nBe available to participate in both the virtual and physical components of the BIP.\nMeet any specific academic or eligibility requirements indicated for this programme.\n\nAs this BIP includes a physical mobility period hosted at TUIASI (Iasi\, Romania)\, it is intended for students coming from other INGENIUM partner institutions.
