SUMMARY:Research Ethics and Integrity by Dr Sean Lacey
DESCRIPTION:Research Ethics and Integrity by Sean Lacey \nResearch ethics and research integrity encompass the principles and practices that underpin responsible research and innovation. They are intrinsic to all research activity and fundamental to achieving research excellence. More than a regulatory requirement\, they lie at the core of research itself—supporting trust among researchers\, confidence in the research record\, and\, crucially\, society’s trust in research evidence and expertise. \nMaintaining high standards in research ethics and integrity requires both personal commitment and professional competence. \nThis training focused on encouraging reflection on personal attitudes and behaviours in research\, alongside promoting awareness of\, and alignment with\, The Munster Statement on the Principles of Research Ethics and Research Integrity. \nExercises included: \n\nThe Dilemma Game: This exercise supported participants in identifying key principles\, values\, and potential misconduct in research It provided a structured framework to analyse realistic dilemmas\, consider alternative courses of action\, and articulate and defend decisions.\nVirtues and Norms: This exercise explored how ethical virtues can be translated into practical Participants examined research integrity dilemmas from multiple perspectives and engaged in dialogue to connect personal values with professional norms.

SUMMARY:Research to Impact #1 by Robert Ludgate & Dr Angela Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Enabling Research for Impact \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by Munster Technological University\, Cork | 25–29 May 2026Prepared by Dr Angela Palmer & Robert Ludgate\, MTU Research Impact Coordinators \nThe INGENIUM Senior Summer School 2026 explores how research can create meaningful and lasting change in society\, industry\, public policy\, health\, and the environment. The programme introduces students to the concept of “research impact\,” emphasising that impact is not simply academic outputs such as papers\, datasets\, or conference presentations\, but the real-world difference those outputs make for people and communities. Through the “impact pathway” model\, participants learn how research develops from inputs and activities into outputs\, outcomes\, and ultimately long-term impact. The guide also explains the importance of both the reach of impact — how widely change is felt — and its significance\, meaning how deeply lives\, systems\, or behaviours are transformed. \nThe summer school encourages students to design research with impact in mind from the very beginning. Participants are guided to identify who their work is intended to benefit\, what changes it could realistically achieve\, how those changes can happen\, and how success can be measured. The programme highlights scientific\, societal\, and economic or technological forms of impact\, showing how projects can contribute across multiple areas simultaneously. Students will apply these ideas to INGENIUM challenge themes including last-mile healthcare\, inclusive sport\, smart electric vehicle technologies\, and coastal water sustainability. Overall\, the initiative aims to strengthen participants’ skills in interdisciplinary collaboration\, ethical innovation\, problem-solving\, and communicating research in ways that deliver tangible benefits for society.

Building on the earlier co-design work of the INGENIUM Education Lab\, this phase moved from collaborative development into institutional approval\, platform delivery\, and participant engagement. \nThe programme was formally approved by the Senate of the University of Crete as an 8 ECTS asynchronous faculty development course within the INGENIUM European University Alliance\, designed as a self-directed online learning experience that combines expert video lectures\, multilingual transcripts\, scholarly readings\, formative quizzes\, guided reflection\, peer-coaching\, and an applied educational action research project. \nWebsite https://elearn.ingenium-university.eu/course/index.php?categoryid=8 \nThe project is now in an important implementation phase. The MOOC has already been launched\, and 78 participants are currently active in the course. This marks a significant transition from collaborative planning to real pedagogical uptake across the alliance. What began as a joint effort to rethink assessment and feedback has now become a live faculty development initiative with international reach and concrete participation. \nKallia Katsampoxaki-Hodgetts\, University of Crete (Lead)\nThomas O’Mahony\, Munster Technological University\nOana Elena Colt\, Technical University of Iasi\, Romania\nCai Weaver\, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences\nJudit Vari\, University of Rouen\, France\nSimeon Slavchev\, Medical University of Sofia\, Bulgaria\nMariano Pierantozzi\, Unich\, Italy \nInnovative Audio Escape Learning Project\nThis Joint Education Lab project\, co-created by the University of Rouen Normandy and Xamk\, addresses the critical need for versatile\, scalable gamification in higher education. Rather than solving abstract puzzles\, students must explicitly apply specific management theories to navigate supply chain strikes\, AI malfunctions\, and HR dilemmas. Having undergone five rigorous iterations across contact\, remote\, and hybrid environments with active student co-creation\, the project delivers a proven\, highly adaptable framework to foster flipped learning and interdisciplinary knowledge transfer across the INGENIUM alliance. \nPresenters are Mercedes Bravo Rebolledo Permanent Teaching Associate (University of Rouen Normandy) and Niama Meziati\, 3rd Year BA student (University of Rouen Normandy). \n  \nRegister to the webinar in order to get the link to join: Registration link

SUMMARY:Blended Intensive Program (BIP) on Flourishing: Mental Health and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Mental health is critically important to everyone\, everywhere. Yet\, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) reports\, more than a billion people are living with mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression\, making these disorders among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Suicide alone claimed an estimated 727\,000 lives in 2021\, ranking among the top causes of death for young people. Despite this alarming reality\, attention to mental wellbeing and mental health remains peripheral. As the United Nations and WHO have also warned\, misinformation and disinformation compound these challenges by deepening stigma\, undermining trust in institutions\, and impeding collective action. \nIn response to these challenges\, the Faculty of Public Health “Prof. Tzecomir Vodenitcharov\, MD\, DSc” at the Medical University–Sofia is proud to launch its Blended Intensive Program (BIP) on Flourishing: Mental Health and Wellbeing. This program will combine on-site learning in Sofia with virtual preparatory sessions\, offering students and staff an opportunity to explore in a safe environment mental health\, wellbeing and human flourishing.  stigmatisation and solutions. Drawing inspiration from the WHO’s call for systemic change\, the BIP will emphasize stigma reduction\, prevention and care\, as well as integration of mental health and wellbeing modules in universities’ curricula. \nParticipants have the opportunity to engage with evidence-based research\, lived experience\, and examples of good practice from INGENIUM ALLIENCE and Erasmus eco-sphere universities as well with practitioners and policy-makers. Participants will gain understanding of mental health and wellbeing\, while acquiring practical skills to foster flourishing in their environments. We will address how stigma around mental illness persists\, why safe spaces for open discussion are critical\, and how universities as well as public health systems can integrate mental wellbeing without leaving anyone behind. \nStudents and Faculty members will also work together in workshops and reflective seminars to address questions such as: How can we reshape environments that influence mental health? How can misinformation be countered to preserve dignity and human rights? And how can universities\, communities\, and public institutions create spaces that foster resilience and wellbeing? By developing both conceptual and practical skills\, participants will be equipped to contribute to university environments where mental health is valued\, promoted\, and protected. \nWe warmly invite students\, faculty\, and staff from partner institutions to apply. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. This is more than an academic exercise: it is a call to action to invest in people and societies. For more information and registration details\, please contact Elisaveta Petrova-Geretto (e.geretto@foz.mu-sofia.bg). \nJoin us in Sofia as we work together to reimagine mental health care and create environments in which individuals and societies can truly flourish. \nBlended Intensive Program (BIP) on Flourishing: Mental Health and Wellbeing \nThe Faculty of Public Health “Prof. Tzecomir Vodenitcharov\, MD\, DSc”\, Medical University – Sofia is pleased to announce the launch of a Blended Intensive Program (BIP) dedicated to exploring the critical importance of mental health\, wellbeing\, and the conditions that enable human flourishing. \nThe BIP will take place in Sofia\, Bulgaria from the 20th to the 24th of April 2026 \n📖 Program Details: \n\nOn-Site Activities: A 5-day intensive program hosted at the Faculty of Public Health.\nVirtual Component: One online preparatory meeting on the 16th of April 2026 in line with BIP guidelines.\nVirtual Component: One online conclusion meeting on the 7th of May 2026 in line with BIP guidelines.\n\n✅ Eligibility: \nThe program is open to students\, faculty\, and staff (minimum of 20 students) from at least three Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)\, facilitated through interinstitutional agreements. \n🌱 Program Focus: \nThe BIP emphasizes “Flourishing”—understanding mental health and wellbeing not just as the absence of illness but as the presence of conditions for growth\, resilience\, and fulfilment. \nParticipants will explore: \n\nWhat is mental health?\nWhat is mental wellbeing?\nHow can we create supportive environments for human flourishing?\nWhy is it essential to lift the stigma around mental health?\nHow can we foster safe\, open spaces for dialogue and support?\nWhat is the role of universities in promoting and protecting mental health?\n\n🎓 Methods and Pedagogical Approach: \n\nLectures and seminars delivered by an interdisciplinary team of experts in psychology\, psychiatry\, public health\, social sciences\, computer sciences.\nCase studies illustrating challenges and solutions in promoting mental wellbeing across diverse contexts.\nInteractive workshops on resilience\, stress management and self-care.\nGroup projects developing strategies to promote flourishing in academic and workplace settings.\n\n🎯 Expected Learning Outcomes: \nParticipants will: \n\nGain a comprehensive understanding of mental health\, mental wellbeing\, and flourishing.\nAcquire tools to identify and reduce stigma associated with mental health.\nDevelop practical strategies to foster safe\, supportive spaces for dialogue.\nExplore evidence-based approaches to promoting resilience and wellbeing at individual and community levels.\nStrengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and networking within the field of public health and mental health promotion.\n\n🌍 Program Objectives: \n\nTo empower students with knowledge and skills to promote mental health and wellbeing.\nTo normalize mental health discussions and reduce stigma through open dialogue.\nTo share best practices for creating flourishing environments in education\, work\, and society.\nTo invest in future leaders who can prioritize wellbeing as a foundation for sustainable public health.\n\n📝 Application Process: \nInterested students are encouraged to apply promptly\, as spaces are limited and participation will be determined on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n📌 Registration link:\nBIP Sofia 2026 Registration Form: Flourishing: Mental Health and Wellbeing – Google Forms \n📧 For further details and application procedures\, please contact:\nElisaveta Petrova-Geretto – e.geretto@foz.mu-sofia.bg \n✨ This program represents a unique hands -on opportunity for students to engage in critical conversations\, foster interdisciplinary collaboration\, and contribute to building a culture of flourishing and wellbeing.

SUMMARY:Staff Academy Webinar: AI
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the academic year\, INGENIUM organises several public Staff Academy webinars where there are 1–3 short case presentations (20minutes each) on cutting-edge teaching practices\, followed by a lively discussion and Q&A sessions. The webinars unfold on Zoom and are hosted by the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk). Register to the webinar here to get the link to join! \nAI in education\nApril’s Staff Academy Webinar will focus on AI. Get to know the speakers and their topics below. \nGen AI – Opportunities and Challenges in Education\, by Professor Jim O’Mahony\nThis session will explore the emergence of technologies\, tools\, and platforms which are being shaped by generative AI. In particular\, we will highlight strategies for the safe and responsible adoption of generative AI as it pertains to teaching\, learning and assessment. We will look at how to manage security and privacy issues\, and what specific platforms and applications should be promoted as part of a modern teaching approach. \nProfessor Jim O’Mahony is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at Munster Technological University (MTU). In addition\, Jim is the AI Lead for the Teaching and Learning Unit\, MTU Cork and Co-Chair of MTU’s Working Group on Generative Artificial Intelligence. He has served as a member of the National Advisory Group on Generative AI for the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning\, contributing to the strategic development of AI integration in Irish higher education\, and works with the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) to support school management teams in their work. \nJim specialises in making AI tools more accessible to educators and demonstrating their practical applications in enhancing student learning experiences. His expertise spans a range of AI platforms beyond Chat GPT and he is dedicated to exploring how technology can support education while keeping the work we do as educators very much human focused. \nJim produces the popular LinkedIn newsletter “AI Simplified – for Educators\,” sharing the latest tools\, tips\, and Gen AI platforms to help educators work better and smarter. \nCreating Classroom AI: From Concept to Student Use\, by Aitor Iriondo Pascual\nYou do not need to be an AI expert to encounter AI in education — but you do need to relate to it. How should AI be understood in the classroom\, where are its limits\, and what becomes possible when teachers and students move from using AI to creating it? The topic connects the broader educational questions around trust\, learning\, and technology with practical ways of building AI\, from beginner-friendly approaches to more advanced implementations in existing tools and workflows. In this way\, classroom AI becomes not only something to discuss\, but something to shape. \nAitor Iriondo Pascual holds a doctorate in informatics and is a researcher at the University of Skövde working at the intersection of artificial intelligence\, digital human modelling\, and industrial engineering. His work focuses on how AI can be used not only as a general-purpose assistant\, but also as a practical component in technical systems for education\, ergonomics\, and industrial optimization. He has experience with computer vision for pose estimation\, simulation-based multi-objective optimization using machine learning\, and the development of AI-supported tools that combine human expertise with automated analysis. His interest lies in making advanced AI understandable\, applicable\, and useful in real contexts for both students and professionals. \nRobust Tracking Algorithms for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s)\, by Dobrea Dan Marius\nIn several UAV guidance systems\, robust object tracking is a primary requirement. One of the primary goals of the different autopilot softwares (PX4\, ArduPilot or Betaflight) is to guide the UAV along a predefined trajectory based on GPS data. Furthermore\, various UAV systems employ alternative guidance systems that facilitate target tracking to enable (1) maneuvering within a defined formation for multiple UAVs\, (2) following and intercepting a moving system\, or (3) avoiding potential collisions. \nThis presentation will focus on a novel algorithm that addresses the conflicting requirements of real-time operation in a real\, complex environment on an embedded unit\, while enhancing detection performance and maintaining computational efficiency. \nThis presentation also advances the open-source ecosystem by disseminating a practical\, validated approach to real-time object tracking for UAVs\, grounded entirely in open-source software and hardware. \nDobrea Dan Marius received the Ph.D. from Gh. Asachi Technical University\, Faculty of Electronics\, Telecommunications & Information Technology\, in Iasi\, Romania\, in 2005\, and a habilitation in 2018. Dobrea Dan Marius is a professor in the Department of Applied Electronics and Intelligent Systems. His research interests include digital signal processing\, AI\, intelligent systems\, embedded systems\, UAVs\, sensors\, and IoT. He has authored over 90 books\, patents\, journal articles\, and conference papers. \nRegister to the webinar here\nStaff Academy event recordings and webinars will be published on INGENIUM YouTube channel.
