Exploring Innovation through IPD at MTU
The Innovative Product Development (IPD) module at Munster Technological University (MTU) offers a unique opportunity for students across the INGENIUM Alliance to engage in an international, multidisciplinary learning experience. It brings together learners from diverse countries, academic backgrounds, and cultures to collaboratively explore innovation through an immersive online environment. What began as a module for engineering and business students in Ireland has now evolved into a cross-campus experience connecting learners from Ireland, Germany, Kenya, and other partner universities.
Students work in diverse teams to develop innovative product ideas, carry out patent and market research, explore ethical and sustainability dimensions, and build functional prototypes – all while studying online. The format allows flexibility, with classes held via Zoom and supported through MTU’s Canvas learning platform. Students also have the opportunity to manufacture and test their prototypes remotely using 3D printing and digital fabrication techniques.
For many participants, IPD has become more than just a module – it’s a steppingstone into real-world design, teamwork, and entrepreneurship.
Jael, a student from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA), shared her experience: “Working with students across cultures on a shared product vision was both challenging and inspiring. The IPD module gave me real confidence in my ideas and helped me grow personally and professionally.”
Through IPD, students develop valuable skills in communication, leadership, critical thinking, and cross-cultural collaboration. Many have taken their projects beyond the classroom, entering international competitions and business incubators such as Student Inc. The inclusion of students from universities like HKA and Murang’a University of Technology has added new perspectives and strengthened the shared learning environment.
As the next academic year approaches, MTU and its INGENIUM partners look forward to welcoming a new group of students into the IPD community. Students interested in learning more can speak with their home university’s INGENIUM coordinator.
