INGENIUM Policy on Multilingualism and Interculturality is out!

Geographical, cultural and linguistic diversity is one of the major strengths of the INGENIUM alliance: 10 partners from 10 countries with 11 official national languages.

Strongly committed to the European Education and Research Areas, the INGENIUM Policy on Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding highlights the importance of languages and intercultural skills for students and staff studying and working in international environments. The core components of the INGENIUM policy are built around the main areas of higher education: teaching, learning, research, governance and communication with a focus on the intercultural dimension in education.

Embracing multilingualism and fostering intercultural communication in European universities is an investment in understanding, empathy, and global citizenship. By celebrating linguistic richness and bridging cultural divides, we pave the way for collaborative learning, mutual respect, and a more interconnected world where every voice finds resonance and every perspective is valued.

The policy aims to:

• strengthen the use and role of languages in the key areas of higher education;
• define the use and role of the English language vis-à-vis the use of national languages; • make recommendations to support multilingualism;
• encourage plurilingual education and communication;
• raise intercultural awareness;
• foster inclusion and accessibility through languages, language teaching and interculturality.

Recommendations include: pre-mobility language and culture courses for Erasmus students, courses of advanced English for administrative staff, English as a Medium of Instruction for Intercultural Teaching, workshops on interculturality, bilingual communication on campus (local language and English), translation tools and support.

All these initiatives will enhance communication and cooperation between INGENIUM students and staff, improve quality of teaching, and contribute to reducing discrimination and exclusion. They will also increase mobility flows and international study opportunities within the INGENIUM European campus.
