Chieti: The Ancient Heart of Abruzzo

  1. One of the Oldest Cities in Italy– Chieti is believed to have been founded by the ancient Italic tribe of the Marrucini around 1000 BC, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Italy.
  2. The Legend of Achilles– According to myth, Chieti was founded by Achilles, the Greek hero of the Trojan War, who named it “Teate” after his mother, Thetis.
  3. National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo– The Museo Archeologico Nazionale d’Abruzzo (Villa Frigerj) houses the famous “Guerriero di Capestrano”, an imposing 6th-century BC warrior statue, one of the most important pre-Roman artifacts in Italy.
  4. The Cathedral of San Giustino– This is one of the oldest churches in Abruzzo, dating back to the 9th century. Its crypt still holds relics of Saint Giustino, the patron saint of Chieti.
  5. Chieti Underground– Beneath the city lies a network of tunnels and Roman cisterns, which were part of an ancient aqueduct system that supplied water to the city.
  6. Chieti’s Stunning View– Due to its position on a hill, Chieti offers breathtaking views of both the Adriatic Sea and the Majella Mountains.

Pescara: The Vibrant Coastal City

  1. Birthplace of Gabriele D’Annunzio– The famous poet, writer, and politician Gabriele D’Annunzio was born in Pescara in 1863. His birthplace is now the Casa Natale di Gabriele D’Annunzio, a museum dedicated to his life and works.
  2. Ponte del Mare– This stunning pedestrian and cycle bridge is one of the largest in Italy, offering panoramic views of the city, the sea, and the mountains.
  3. Pescara Jazz Festival– One of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious jazz festivals takes place in Pescara every summer, attracting internationally renowned artists.
  4. Majestic Beaches– Pescara boasts some of the longest sandy beaches on the Adriatic coast, making it a popular summer destination.
