… Karlsruhe is the birthplace of the bicycle? In 1817 Karl Freiherr von Drais, who was born in Karlsruhe, invented the “running machine”, which is the origin of the bicycle.

… cycling is extremely popular at HKA? An HKA team with 162 active members cycled 30.500 km within 3 weeks in the summer of 2024. With all the love for bicylces in Karlsruhe it comes as no surprise that there are two professorships for cycling in the Transportation Management study program at HKA.

… the smallest HKA logo fits easily in a hair? Matthias Wagner, an HKA student of Electrical Engineering, managed to create an HKA logo whose letters have a stroke width of only 8 µm. For comparison: The human hair of a Central European is approx. 60 to 80 µm wide.

… Karlsruhe is Germany’s capital of justice? The Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice are both located in Karlsruhe, as is the Office of the Federal Prosecutor of Germany.

… among non-native speakers world-wide, the best English is spoken in Karlsruhe? A study from 2024 found that Karlsruhe has the best English language level in the world. It is even ahead of cities such as Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

… Karlsruhe is a fan-shaped city? The streets of Karlsruhe radiate from the castle in the centre outwards, creating the shape of a fan. This radial city plan is said to have been an inspiration for the design of Washington DC (T. Jefferson visited Karlsruhe in 1788).

… Karlsruhe is a major IT hotspot? Germany’s first formal study degree program in computer science started in 1972 in Karlsruhe. In 1984 Germany’s first ever e-mail was received at the University of Karlsruhe.

… there is a pyramid in the centre of Karlsruhe? The pyramid on Karlsruhe’s market square is the tomb of the city’s founder Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach (1679-1738) and a landmark of the city.

… Karlsruhe has a vibrant student life? There are 9 universities located in Karlsruhe with more than 35.000 enrolled students. So there are many opportunities to study and even more to go out (bars, coffee shops, festivals, etc.).
