University of Crete welcomed for second time the Senior School and in this edition, we travelled “From Earth’s surface to Space”.
Students and staff from the 10 Universities of the Alliance visited from 19 to 23 May the Voutes University Campus in Heraklion and explored dynamic synergies, collaborations, exchanged ideas and good practices. The Senior School, Staff Academy, and INGENIUM member meetings were successfully organized, bringing together over 160 participants.
Bridging Earth and Space
The INGENIUM Senior School “From Earth’s Surface to Space” made a holistic approach of climate change and introduced the importance of earth observation from space through innovative technologies and commercialization efforts in understanding and protecting our planet. The lectures, workshops and hands on activities were organized in four main pillars: Climate Crisis and its Impact, Observing the Earth, Connectivity, and Innovation and Commercialization. Academics from the University of Crete, along with numerous international experts, contributed presentations that helped shape a well-designed school grounded in strong academic principles.
Master, PhD and early career researchers were organized into interdisciplinary teams and, guided by their mentors, developed and presented innovative projects that reflected the insights they gained throughout the school.
Immersive Experiences Beyond the Classroom
This Senior Summer School emphasized experiential learning. Students and mentors went beyond the classroom and engaged directly with the natural environment and cutting-edge scientific infrastructure:
• At the Finokalia Atmospheric Observatory, located on Crete’s northern coast, participants performed in situ observations and learned about atmospheric chemistry, pollution tracking, and climate monitoring.
• They visited the Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark and gained an insight into Crete’s unique geological history, biodiversity, and conservation efforts.
• Participants had the opportunity to see the archaeological site of Zominthos and the remnants of Minoan buildings.
• The Skinakas Observatory, perched high in the mountains of Crete, opened its doors for a night of astronomical observation, bridging the gap between Earth science and space research.
Innovation in Higher Education
During the Staff Academy representatives from each higher education institution presented the teaching methods they had developed to each other. The idea was to share best practices.
The Cretan experience
Participants enjoyed an authentic and unforgettable Cretan experience, from the seaside beauty of Plaka in Elounda to the majestic heights of Mount Psiloritis. They also had the opportunity to indulge in traditional Cretan cuisine and immerse themselves in the island’s vibrant local dances. Even an unexpected earthquake offered INGENIUM participants a firsthand glimpse into what it’s like to live in the Mediterranean region.
