Description

This micro-credential addresses how climate change affects urban infrastructure and how to assess and manage these impacts. It translates climate policy and science into practical approaches for infrastructure resilience and long-term performance. Topics include EU climate proofing, risk assessment, adaptation measures, and performance evaluation. It provides an integrated framework to address climate requirements across planning, engineering, and evaluation. It trains participants to conduct urban infrastructure climate risk assessments, apply microsimulation tools under climate stress, and prioritize adaptation measures. Ultimately, it enables students to integrate climate adaptation into planning, design, and management of urban projects. This qualifies them to ensure EU climate proofing compliance and make evidence-based decisions enhancing urban resilience.

Contents and Methods

The syllabus is structured into six teaching units, delivered over four weeks, designed to progressively build competencies from regulatory frameworks to practical modelling.
Unit 1: EU climate proofing essentials. Covers foundational knowledge of mandatory EU climate proofing requirements and Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) principles.
Unit 2: Climate risk and vulnerability assessment. Introduces core concepts for evaluating climate risks specifically applied to urban infrastructure.
Unit 3: Application of the climate risk vulnerability assessment framework to urban street. A hands-on module focusing on the practical application of risk assessment tools to street-level infrastructure.
Unit 4: Sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) as a climate adaptation measure for urban streets. Focuses on hydrology and the design of green infrastructure to manage climate impacts.
Unit 5: Strategies to adapt urban roads to climate risks . This unit explores practical engineering and planning strategies for urban roads.
Unit 6: Microscale traffic modelling for climate-resilient and sustainable urban streets. Trains students to independently apply simulation methods to assess the operational, safety, and environmental impacts of adaptation measures.

The micro-credential targets last-years Bachelor's students, Master's students (EQF 7), PhD students (EQF 8), and external professionals seeking specialized training in climate adaptation. The ideal student profile includes individuals involved in the planning, design, assessment, and management of urban infrastructure projects. This encompasses civil and environmental engineers, urban planners, transportation specialists, and public authorities handling EU-funded investments.
Regarding entry requirements, specific academic prerequisites are not explicitly mandated in the proposal. However, the advanced qualification levels imply that participants should have some background in related fields. The program is specifically designed to be inclusive for participants with different backgrounds and knowledge levels, utilizing online tutoring and recorded lectures to support learners across the INGENIUM alliance.

The enrolment fee is €35. Payment instructions will be sent once your place has been confirmed. Fees are non-refundable, except when the course is cancelled or the University is  responsible for the inability to provide the course.
